There are three types of common squirrels including, tree squirrels, ground squirrels, and flying squirrels. Each type of squirrel shares similar characteristics and can create similar damages. All squirrels are considered to be nuisance animals and usually professional squirrel control methods are necessary to get rid of them.

Tree Squirrels

Tree squirrels grow between 1 and 2 feet long including their large and bushy tails. Their coats are generally shades of gray, brown, or black, with light colored underbellies. Tree squirrels prefer to live among hardwood or coniferous forests where ground cover is plentiful. They create nests made of twigs and leaves.

When they seek warm and safe shelter, your attic may seem like the perfect opportunity! Squirrels are very persistent and will do anything to get into an area where food or shelter may be provided. Once inside, squirrels will terrorize your home. The damages will be extensive! Insulation will be pulled for nesting, and soiled by feces and urine.

Ground Squirrels

Ground squirrels have shorter tails, shorter fur, and are just generally smaller than tree squirrels. They range in color from reddish-gray to smoky brown and may even have black spots or stripes. Ground squirrels will create deep and extensive burrows that have multiple exits.

Ground squirrels will burrow near manmade structures or dams, and weaken the structural integrity and cause collapses. While foraging for food ground squirrels may tear up yards causing damages to your lawn and other vegetation.

Flying Squirrels

Flying squirrels are the smallest of the three types. The webs of skin between their fore and hind limbs enable them to glide from tree to tree. These squirrels are typically light brown or gray in color and have large eyes to help them see at night. Flying squirrels prefer to live where they can glide from treetop to treetop without having to descend to the ground.

Flying squirrels will create similar damages as a tree squirrel. Gnawing and chewing on insulation and electrical wires, creating a hazardous electrical fire hazard, and causing outages when running across power lines.
